In commemoration of the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Sidley is hosting an event with Meg Zucker (www.megzucker.com), attorney and U.S. Intermediate Head of AML & Financial Crime at the Royal Bank of Canada; founder and president of the 501(c)(3) non-profit, Don’t Hide It, Flaunt It (www.donthideitflauntit.org); and author of “Born Extraordinary: Empowering Children with Differences and Disabilities” (Penguin Random House, March 2023).
Meg was born with ectrodactyly, which left her with one finger on each hand, shortened forearms, and one toe on each foot (a genetic condition she passed on to two of her three children). During the virtual session Meg will cover:
- Discussions about the varying labels used — disabled vs. differently-abled vs. different — does it matter?
- Her personal experiences relating to having a blatant physical difference in professional settings including while working at a law firm
- Fears of inadvertently offending someone
- Topics relating to people’s inclination to help those they perceive in need
- When you have a child that is different/disabled —sharing the news at work
- Discovering the path to dignity when you have a visible or invisible difference — in the workplace and beyond
Ahead of the session, you can read Meg’s latest piece for the Los Angeles Times, “How should you offer help to someone you perceive as disabled?”
