ANKUR SHINGAL, a former federal prosecutor, represents clients in government and internal investigations, complex commercial litigation with a focus on consumer class actions, and congressional inquiries. Ankur has first-chaired multiple trials, argued dispositive motions in both criminal and civil matters, taken and defended depositions of fact and expert witnesses, and prepared individuals for testimony in federal and state courts, and before the United States of Department of Justice, United States Securities and Exchange Commission, and the United States Congress. In addition to his focus on white collar, consumer class action, and congressional matters, Ankur has handled matters involving, among other things, breach of contract, securities fraud, various business torts, and intellectual property disputes.
Ankur serves as a trusted advisor to clients across a broad range of industries, including the financial, automotive, technology, retail, and pharmaceutical industries. Based on his experience as a former federal prosecutor, clients often call upon Ankur to conduct investigations both in response to government and internal inquiries. Ankur has deep experience in interviewing witnesses, understanding the legal and practical business implications facing his clients, and developing themes for resolution, whether that means a government criminal referral, beneficial settlement, or trial. Ankur is a versatile advocate, with experience in handling a wide-range of matters, stretching from DOJ grand jury investigations to handling multi-district and cross-border civil litigation matters involving complicated technologies. Ankur also has the rare experience of preparing multiple high-ranking business executives for testimony before the United States Congress and associated inquiries, underscoring his ability to effectively assist clients in high pressure situations on the most public of stages.
Prior to joining Sidley, Ankur served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of California (San Francisco). During his time as a federal prosecutor, Ankur tried multiple cases, and handled numerous other court appearances, including evidentiary, suppression, and sentencing hearings. Ankur prosecuted an array of offenses involving narcotics trafficking, firearms, fraud, money laundering, child exploitation, and robbery. A number of these investigations carried a digital component, including online child exploitation, narcotics trafficking, and cryptocurrency laundering. Those experiences ensure that Ankur is equally comfortable interviewing a client’s employee as he is cross-examining the opposing side’s most important witness.
Ankur maintains a very proactive pro bono practice. He has handled matters including prisoners’ rights, habeas corpus appeals, and immigration matters for asylum-seekers.
Before serving as an AUSA, Ankur worked as an associate at two other law firms, and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerome A. Holmes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the Honorable Virginia M. Kendall of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
