RICHARD CHEN’s practice focuses on complex patent litigation and his experience spans its most critical phases. Richard has developed and assessed infringement and validity theories, managed and conducted expert and fact discovery, and worked as a member of a successful trial team. Richard has applied his litigation experience in matters involving a wide variety of technologies, with an emphasis on biologic medicines, wireless data standards, and computer software.
Richard served as a law clerk to the Honorable Roy S. Payne of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas before joining Sidley. As a law clerk, Richard assisted the Court in several patent infringement jury trials and over a dozen claim construction hearings.
Richard also brings real-world scientific experience to his practice. Before attending law school, Richard worked as a research associate at Stanford University School of Medicine where he studied developmental cardiology and translational medicine and was a contributing author to two peer-reviewed publications.
Richard speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese.
