Biography

ADAM WELLAND is a life sciences transactions lawyer and former in-house biotechnology executive who advises genomics, diagnostics, drug development, and medical device companies on complex intellectual property and commercial agreements. He focuses on strategic collaborations, licensing, research and development agreements, supply and manufacturing arrangements, and other high-impact life sciences transactions. With more than 14 years of senior in-house experience, Adam brings a business-driven, operationally grounded perspective to negotiating and structuring revenue-generating partnerships and global strategic alliances. He advises public, private, and venture-backed companies across all stages of growth, from emerging platform biotech companies to established industry leaders.

Former Biotech Legal Executive. Prior to joining Sidley, Adam held senior leadership roles at two global biotechnology companies. As vice president of Commercial Legal for Illumina, Inc. (Nasdaq: ILMN), a developer of sequencing and genomics technologies, he led strategic intellectual property and commercial transactions supporting product development, commercialization, and global expansion. He negotiated complex cross-border collaborations, licensing agreements, and partnerships across multiple jurisdictions. Adam also served as interim head of Illumina’s Asia Pacific legal team, overseeing all legal matters throughout the region.

He later served as Vice President of Transactions and Partnerships at Altos Labs, Inc., a privately held drug development company with a substantial focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning. As an early employee he played a central role in building the company’s contract-related infrastructure and systems from the ground up. Adam led the negotiation of hundreds of agreements with universities, suppliers, and key partners worldwide, and regularly advised the clinical development, CMC, and operations teams to help drive the business forward.

Deep Experience in Clinical Diagnostics. Adam has substantial experience in diagnostics and precision medicine transactions. At Illumina, he served as a primary legal advisor to several clinical business units, including oncology, and was instrumental in creating and implementing the contractual frameworks for Illumina’s clinical diagnostics products and services. He now leverages this industry knowledge to advise both emerging and established diagnostics companies in their most significant transactions.

Strategic Operationally Focused Mindset. Adam understands how life sciences transactions function beyond execution. Having worked closely with scientific, clinical, manufacturing, and executive leadership teams, he structures agreements that are pragmatic, scalable, and aligned with long-term business strategy. His experience includes contract compliance counseling, internal training, executive presentations, and post-closing implementation.

This combination of senior in-house leadership, deep industry knowledge, and transactional sophistication enables Adam to serve as a strategic advisor to life sciences companies navigating complex intellectual property, commercialization, and global partnership matters.
