Matthew R. Devine, a partner in Sidley’s Chicago office, has been selected as part of the seventh cohort of Leadership Greater Chicago’s The Daniel Burnham Fellowship. The fellowship prepares selected Chicago leaders to “positively impact Chicago, its future, and the continued economic progress of the region” through community initiatives addressing issues including workforce development, public policy reform, and food security.
Matt is a distinguished trial lawyer renowned for his representation of clients in high-stakes trials and arbitrations nationwide. His practice is focused on heavily litigated aspects of business law, including high-stakes “mass raid” cases, trade secrets, and class action defense and defending corporate clients against government subpoenas and investigations. Matt routinely counsels corporate clients and their board of directors in high-profile litigation matters involving substantial media attention and reputational risk.
Matt has provided pro bono representation to indigent criminal defendants in state and federal court. He recently led a defense team that challenged a 40-year-old murder conviction in Cook County, Illinois, on grounds that critical evidence admitted at trial constituted “junk science” that violated the client’s constitutional rights. The argument prevailed, and the client was freed from jail.
