Matt routinely counsels corporate clients and their board of directors in high-profile litigation matters involving substantial media attention and reputational risk.
Chambers USA and Legal 500 U.S. have recognized Matt as a leading litigator in the United States, most recently in 2024. Chambers USA described Matt as a “go-to trial lawyer…noted for his sophisticated representation in class action defense, trade secrets and breach of contract related litigation” (2024).
One client informed Chambers, Matt is “an incredible lawyer, and his pragmatism and understanding of the big picture are valued,” and noted his “high-level strategic thinking” (2024).
In 2024, Matt was selected by The Best Lawyers in America® for Consumer Law, and included on Crain’s Chicago Business “Notable Leaders in Law” list.
Matt has acted as lead counsel for Fortune 500 companies and other clients in high-profile business disputes, including successfully prosecuting a major “mass raid” case as plaintiff for Bayport Financial Holdings USA and Bayport Colombia, S.A. in federal court in Miami, prevailing in a Lanham Act matter on behalf of Novanta, Inc., a Nasdaq-listed medical device company in the Middle District of Florida, and winning multiple private arbitrations for a major energy utility.
Matt also devotes time to pro bono work, representing indigent criminal defendants in state and federal court, for which he was recognized with the “Excellence in Pro Bono Service” award in 2016 from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He recently led a defense team that challenged a 40-year-old murder conviction in Cook County, Illinois on grounds that critical evidence admitted at trial constituted “junk science” that violated the client’s constitutional rights. The argument prevailed, and the client was freed from jail.
