Increased Transparency Imminent for UK Property-Holding Overseas Entities as Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act 2022 Receives Royal Assent

March 23, 2022
Accelerated by the current conflict in Ukraine, the UK government has pushed through Parliament the Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Bill, which received royal assent on 15 March 2022.

The Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act (the Act) seeks to reduce the perceived obscurity surrounding the identity of beneficial owners of overseas entities that hold UK land interests and, ultimately, act as a deterrent to those who seek to launder the proceeds of crime through such ownership.
