RYAN TAN focuses his practice on complex international disputes and provides clients with strategic advice on day-to-day contentious matters. He also advises clients on issues concerning crisis management, public policy, and global geopolitical developments.
Ryan has represented private and public sector clients in a range of international arbitrations and commercial litigations in the energy, construction, technology, maritime, and retail industries, among others. He has been involved in proceedings under various institutional rules, including the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, SCMA, and UNCITRAL arbitration rules, and before the Supreme Court of Singapore. Ryan has also advised international organizations and governments in Asia on public international law issues.
Prior to joining Sidley, Ryan practiced with another leading international arbitration practice in London. Ryan earned his B.A. in law from Trinity College, University of Cambridge, in 2015 on a scholarship awarded by the Public Service Commission of Singapore. He is admitted to the New York State Bar.
Ryan was previously a senior policy officer in the Singapore government, where his portfolio included advising the executive leadership on international defense policy and national security, with a focus on the U.S.-China geostrategic relationship. He also served in the Singapore military as a commando officer.
Ryan is trilingual in English, Mandarin, and Malay.
