SEAN SMITH focuses his practice on advising financial services clients on a wide range of consumer credit, consumer protection, and commercial credit regulatory issues. His clients include banks, credit companies, fintechs, private equity firms, and other non-bank financial services companies.
Sean advises clients on compliance with the broad range of federal and state laws that apply to consumer and commercial lending, including the Truth in Lending Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Gramm-Leach Bliley Act, Electronic Fund Transfer Act, Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, Military Lending Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act, UDAAP/UDAP, margin-stock lending requirements, and state laws on lending, licensing, usury, and privacy. Sean also advises clients on structuring partnership programs between banks and non-bank, structuring credit products to ensure regulatory compliance, and engaging with federal and state regulators on enforcement and supervisory matters.
Prior to joining Sidley, Sean worked at a large U.S. bank and a state enforcement regulator.
