RICHARD CHEN focuses his practice on guiding clients through all stages of complex intellectual property disputes, from early fact development to critical motions practice and trial.
Richard has led teams responsible for key witnesses and issues in his cases. He excels at refining challenging facts into resonant trial themes that persuade both lay and expert decision makers. Richard has litigated cases across a range of technologies, with an emphasis on those that involve biologic medicines, computer software, scientific instruments, and cellular technologies. Clients have trusted and called on him to develop trial strategies and case narratives in multiple, significant matters.
Richard has understood the importance of building case narratives since starting his legal practice. He previously served as a law clerk in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The court was and remains one of the nation’s busiest IP dockets, and during Richard’s term, it presided over multiple patent jury trials and dozens of high-stakes hearings.
Richard also leverages his real-world scientific experience. Before attending law school, he researched developmental biology at Stanford University School of Medicine. There Richard worked closely with high-level scientists to conduct studies that resulted in two peer-reviewed publications on which he was named a co-author. Richard remains at ease working with scientists, engineers, and experts in his legal practice and uses this ability to develop crisp narratives that his witnesses are eager to present.
Richard speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese.
