The U.S. Supreme Court recently granted Sidley’s petition for certiorari in Soto v. United States. As part of the firm’s pro-bono commitment to veterans of the United States Armed Forces, Sidley is representing Simon Soto, a former Marine, and a class of more than 9,000 veterans denied the full extent of their retroactive Combat-Related Special Compensation. Congress made this type of compensation available specifically for veterans whose disabilities are “combat-related.” The Federal Circuit previously held that the veterans’ retroactive benefits were limited to six years under the Barring Act.
The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case in April—Sidley’s Tacy Flint will argue the appeal. The decision will have a significant impact on the lives of veterans who were injured serving their country.
J. Simone Jones (Chicago), Tacy Flint (Chicago), Emily Wexler (Chicago), Ankur Shingal (Chicago), Lakeisha Mays (Washington, D.C.), and Camille Sanches (Chicago) represented the veterans in their petition for certiorari. The firm is co-counsel with National Veterans Legal Services Program on the matter.
