Rochelle Ballantyne has been honored by the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) for being a “superb advocate” on behalf of an eight-year-old NYLAG client with autism. The client had bounced between several inappropriate schools and was receiving limited services through Home Instruction. Rochelle began working with the client during a secondment with NYLAG and continued the representation on a pro bono basis following her return to Sidley. The client’s special education needs have been met through Rochelle’s dedicated advocacy in an impartial hearing that spanned several months. Rochelle successfully obtained a comprehensive educational evaluation for the client that recommended he receive specialized behavioral therapy and a private school tailored to his unique needs. She further convinced the Department of Education to place the client in a specialized non-public school where he is receiving the support he needs.
Each year, NYLAG conducts a pro bono recognition event in honor of five exceptional law firms and individual awardees. The event recognizes the efforts of individuals who have gone above and beyond their pro bono contributions.
